Stepping Back, Looking Forward Program

School Initiatives and Partnerships

Vision Statement

Our vision is to build healthy, resilient and sustainable communities where all students have the opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability.

Our partnerships will enable us to focus our collective energies and resources to address the factors that hinder educational, health and career attainment of children in far western New South Wales.

By 2020 we will have addressed the inequities confronted by rural, remote, and Indigenous students living in our region through the implementation and evaluation of best practice models that integrate health, education and career choices.

The Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health (BH UDRH) is committed to supporting our regional schools in developing the capacity of their students in building career aspirations and attainment with a specific focus on supporting Indigenous students, families and communities. The impact of career attainment on health and wellbeing is acknowledged as a key social determinant

Nursing Academy Program

The Nursing Academy Program (NAP) is an inclusive program that provides local and regional students the opportunity to explore health science careers and pathways.

The NAP began its first pilot program at the BH UDRH in 2007 involving both Willyama High and Broken Hill High school student partnerships.

NAP has now expanded its program to include parent, medicine and allied health academies for 2009.

Spin A Yarn (SAY) Program

Spin A Yarn (SAY) program is a Speech Pathology Undergraduate Program.

Access to Speech Pathology services is a key issue for our primary schools in Broken Hill and region. The Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health (BHUDRH) in collaboration with the regions primary schools, the University of Sydney and the Remote Cluster, Greater Western Area Health Service (GWAHS) are excited to announce the introduction of the Spin A Yarn (SAY) Program. The SAY program has been developed over the last 6 months and aims to provide urban based Speech Pathology students with a rural and remote learning opportunity within our primary school settings.

The SAY Program hosts the Speech Pathology student cohorts that are progressing to their Master level of Speech Pathology through the University of Sydney and are undertaking clinical experience directly in our primary school systems. It is envisaged that this experience will not only benefit those children in our school system requiring support with communication skills, but also promote rural and remote practice to those who participate.

Student will visit Broken Hill and region each school term to offer this valuable service and learn about our communities and hopefully be tempted to return to the region upon graduation to practice.
